Rick Spencer

Chief Operations Officer

Rick Spencer is the Chief Operations Officer for the Barbershop Harmony Society. In this capacity, Spencer oversees the Communications, Events, Membership, Copyright and Licensing, and Merchandise operations of the organization. Spencer also oversees the Old Songs Library—one of the largest collections of sheet music outside of the Library of Congress—with an estimated total of more than 800,000 titles.

Spencer is a member of the American Choral Directors Association and MENC, The National Association for Music Education and other professional organizations. Prior to becoming the COO, Spencer served the Society as Director of Music and Education where he traveled throughout the United States and Canada, giving demonstrations, lectures, workshops, and master classes exposing both music educators and students of all ages to the benefits and wonders of barbershop harmony. He has presented at state, regional, and national music education conferences and has been published in several music education publications.

Spencer, a Barbershopper since 1989, is a Music Judge,coach, quartet singer, and past chorus director. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Connecticut in 2001. Before joining the Society staff, Spencer was a sixth-grade general music and chorus teacher in East Hartford, Connecticut.
