It’s easy to talk about what you love to do

In the last issue of The Harmonizer, my column discussed the coming Operation Harold Hill and that the only impediment for finding potential singers for your chapter among total strangers is ourselves.  As Poag says, “We have met the enemy and he is us."  (Here is a copy of the column in PDF form: Lamson column 10-2011) Many barbershoppers have told me how easy it is to simply ask someone wheth...

Cape Breton revisited: Try thinking smaller

About this time last year, I was putting together the Jan/Feb 2010 cover story about the Cape Breton, N.S. Chapter called “Thinking Big.” (Read the article here.) They grew from 12 men to 40 in less than a year, and I wanted the barbershop world to understand how, seeing as I’m always on the lookout for the next big thing that could help chapters or the Society at large. In hindsight, maybe I was...

Common attributes of successful chapters

Here's the chance to add/subtract or discuss the list on page 13 of the May/June 2010 issue of The Harmonizer. Apologies if you came to this site earlier and didn't find this post as mentioned in the magazine. Pep talks? PSHAW! Better than 85% percent chance of sunnier days ahead

It's waaaaaaay to early to see what the Membership Growth Task Force is going to come up with -- they are keeping their minds open and their options open while they study the sources of our membership decline and guide us toward remedies. Suffice it to say, we've got some really bright minds working on this issue. (more…)

A new chapter is forming nearby — OH NO!!!

Picture that happening to you. Suddenly, a small group of experienced barbershoppers want to start a new chapter in a neighboring city. SINKING GUT FEELING #1. "What will we ever do?"  This is a totally factual story (as best as my memory and our records might provide). You might be surprised by the result. (more…)

Are our 20 percent most devoted members unwittingly the barrier to growth?

On a guest night in a past chapter, I was asked to take the guests downstairs and show the "Singing is Life" video. It had been a few years since I'd first seen it as a Society employee. As I watched the faces of the men in the room, I wondered whether we perhaps should have had some outside focus groups look at that script before we committed it to celluloid. (more…)

In which decade did most of your members join?

Here are some really interesting numbers developed by Kevin Keller (Society judge and actuarial guru) from the Society database (and briefly discussed on the Harmonet): Of our currrent Society membership, the following percent joined in the time frame listed: (more…)
