Who wants to hear you?
Make your voice heard, and maybe they'll hear your voices!
• Attend your school board meeting. Learn how the school arts budget compares with its athletic budget. Support the national Standards for music education.
• Participate in National Music in the Schools Month. Speak at an assembly.
• Service Clubs: Lions, Elks, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc. are always looking for speakers for their meetings. Using either of the script outlines below, introduce them to another charitable and fraternal organization in the community: SPEBSQSA. Keep it moving— a little talk goes a long way. Let the music be the message. Bring a supply of handouts, plus information and directions to your chapter meeting.
• Chamber of Commerce, Business Improvement District, Convention & Visitors Bureau: Emphasize the community-building aspects of your organization—support for education, charitable donations, tourism dollars resulting from conventions and shows you host.
• Church groups, women's clubs: Emphasize the wholesome entertainment values of barbershop harmony, how it's a great activity for families, fathers & sons together. Perform a gospel set. Talk about the sacred music ensemble in your chapter.
• Scout troops, youth groups, YMCA: Emphasize that young singers are having a ball with barbershop harmony. Show more of the Harmony Explosion video. Order Young Men In Harmony Songbooks or HARMONY EXPLOSION music titles.
• Museum, library, community-education programs: expand on barbershop history, using musical examples from the Heritage of Harmony songbook, and Close Harmony Pioneers audiotape from the Museum.
