Hale-isms

The right word at the right time helps Mark Hale motivate the Masters of Harmony. A few choice morsels from his repertoire....

Updated: 1/20/2006 10:34:14 AM

"It's not the fact that we think of things to do, it's the fact that we DO IT! Otherwise, it's just a good idea."

What we're singing in THIS MOMENT is based entirely on what we sang a moment ago - NOT the last time we sang the song!

Faster does not equal louder - try to make sure you don't equate them in your voice...

"Funny thing about you guys. You like to know what you're doing. It drives me crazy!"

"I won't let you sound weird. I don't like weird sounds either...despite what my quartet does."

"Attendance, attention, and tTrust. That's all I ask.”

“Be as good as you'd want the guy beside you to be!"

"Softs are much harder to sing than louds. Lots of choruses do louds. We're going to dazzle them with our softs."

"If everybody's flat, it should at least be in tune...?"

"The secret to singing with power is to lock the chords... If you aren't locked, it doesn't make any difference how much louder you get."

"This silly thing I have…I like to be in control. I guess that's my problem. But you know what? If it's my problem, it's YOUR problem!"

"You don't just drive the car the way you did last time - there's different traffic!"

"Those judges, doggone it, they have integrity. I can't stand it!" J

"The best thing to do is just to do it my way. And if it's wrong, do it with all your heart, and trust me to figure out that it was wrong."

(to a latecomer) "You know, if it had been 23 minutes ago, you'd have been right on time....."

"You know what? Gold medals are great, but I'm really interested in seeing if we can just make better music."

"The only way for the system to work is for you to trust that everybody else will do it too."

"'Safe' is for other groups. We can't achieve greatness through safety."

"No matter what you might think, I still go home thinking I had a good time......

....you should see me when I'm angry!"

"You can almost treat it like melody. In fact, treat it like melody. In fact, IT IS THE MELODY!"

"It's simple, but it's not easy."

David Wright: "No pitch is the right pitch. There's always one on higher ground that's a little better than the one you're on now."

David Wright: "The correct pitch is like the floor you stand on. You stand above it."

"If you think you're tired now, you've got six months of you-ain't-seen-nuthin'-yet!"

"Get it right, click on save, move on."

"What are you afraid of? Are you afraid of me? I'll give you something to be afraid of..."

"The chorus will take you so far, but the rest of it has to come from you."

"If they don't at least say that you look like you're having a good time, then you've missed an opportunity."

"Those are the things that will haunt us later. And by that, I mean I will haunt YOU."

"The words are not destinations. We never stop the car. We wave at them as we drive by..."

"When I put a breath in, it's not for you. You haven't figured that out yet. When I put a breath in, it's for the audience!"

"The better the instrument, the better the song. Let's build a Stradivarius!"

"If you are bored with it, so will the listener be."

"Impressing [the audience] is easy - just impress me! If you can get past me, I guarantee impressing them will be easy."

"It's the intensity we take back and forward, not the volume."

"Intensity can look like anger if you're not careful. You see it on my face all the time..."

Erin Howden: "I don't want 'here comes the tag' on your face."

Erin Howden: "Anything that does not involve an element of risk is not worth celebrating."

Erin Howden: "This hobby tells you to feel, to emote. It gives you a ticket to just bring it. You're therapists!

Mark: It's something that bowling just doesn't give you."

"It's good, but it's not great. And I must insist on great from now on!"

"You gotta be quick, like...I dunno, like...a boxer or something. Like something quick. I'm losing it, aren't I? Insert metaphor here."

"It's not 'the chorus' singing that way. 'The chorus' is you. Just you."

"The pitch is the surfboard, and you're on top of it, riding it. Right now it sounds like you're trying to hold it up...which means you're drowning!"

"You cannot just be a passenger on this boat. You've gotta grab an oar!"

"What I love is when we go on stage, and after working the songs for a while we start to take chances."

"You're the one in the driver's seat. I'm just the hood ornament."

"We're very fortunate. We've got a couple of months. We've also got a problem - we've only got two months."

Greg Clancy: "Let's find every little thing we can. Why not make it perfect?"

"Let's do that again. Once might have just been an accident..."

"It's all about love, man, and love ain't boring. If it is, you're not doing it right."

"You can't stop there; you have to do a California roll."

"We gotta tame this beast!"

Greg Lyne: "You know what an O looks like, right? It looks like an O! Some of you have a Cheerio up there, but it's been sitting in milk for a while!"

Greg Lyne: "I got it, and I'm from Wisconsin!"

Greg Lyne: "One thing's for certain - David Wright has too much spare time on his hands..."

"Sing it to someone, don't sing it about someone."

"We're sharp? You know what? If that were a consistent problem, I'd work on it."

"Memorize that sound you just made... so you never make it again."

"I'm not gonna lie to you guys as I never do...well, rarely do."

Justin: "We're not going to war, we're in love!"
Mark (to Justin): "You've never been in love, have you?"

"If you can, then DO!"
