HEAT captured the gold today (July 4) in the 2003 MBNA America Collegiate Barbershop Quartet Contest held in Montreal as part of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s weeklong 65th annual international convention.

Twenty-one quartets competed in the contest. All had qualified in preliminary rounds held in the 16 Society districts in the U.S. and Canada. The 2002 champion, Catfish Bend from Bowling Green University, sang their swan song package then presented the gold medals to the new champions. All competitors had qualified in preliminary rounds held in the 16 Society districts.

Members of HEAT are Julian Vazquez, tenor; Paul Saca, lead; Matt Swann, baritone; and Ronny Izquierdo, bass. All are students at the University of Miami. The quartet champion receives gold medals, trophies and a cash prize of $3,500.

The silver medal and a cash prize of $2,500 went to Vocal Tonic. Members are: Aaron Alexander, tenor; Gregory Lee, lead; Matthew MacFadyne, baritone; and Paul Saeger, bass. They hail from Concordia University, Harper College, Northwestern University and University of Illinois.

Three bronze medal winners were also chosen, and those groups will receive cash prizes of $1,000 each. Those winners are:
