A music educator’s take on HCDC

I am a first year student, a music educator from Texas, and I am looking for new ways to get my students involved in activities that will take them off the streets and away from the drugs, gang activity and crime that surrounds them.

I believe that barbershopping can give them something not only enjoyable but something that will be of great value to them throughout their lifetimes.

I've found the courses well presented, well organized, informative and very interesting. Your faculty not only "knows their stuff" but they are anxious to help in any way possible. The general sessions are absolutely wonderful. It's difficult to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it what it's like to sing with a group of 600+ people who have this one thing in common: creating beautiful sounds through harmony. It breaks through all the barriers we can put up as a society and unites everyone no matter who they are or what their station in life. It's fantastic!

I'm already making plans to return ----with students!

When will they get it right?

The Four Man Fishin’ Tackle Choir is back at Harmony College for our fourth year. We came back to improve our skills, and as a result, hope to break into the ranks of international competitors.

We’re also breaking in a new member of the choir, having lost our bari, Bill Woodbeck, during a fishing trip . . . we think. At least he wasn’t with us when we sobered up a couple of days later. Since tenors are harder to find than baritones (dime a dozen) we found another great fisherman and tenor in Mark Wilson and talked Tracey into switching to baritone.

Tracey, Kurtis, Mark and Neil share a love of the Northern Michigan outdoors and are quite willing to sing songs about huntin’, fishin’ and life in general. During a break between ice-fishing and trout season opener we got to thinkin’ . . . Since the top quartets sponsor a cruise to the Caribbean or a trip to Russia, we’d like to do something like that. We’re inviting you to Tracey’s Fish Camp up on Trout Lake. It’s really nice up there with even a sauna and a two-hole privy. Come enjoy some Yooper hospitality.

      Bash highlights

Why all the mystery? Who is the special guest?

If you hadn’t already heard, you’re going to hear something pretty special tonight at the bash. They would have to travel a fairly circuitous route to get here, admittedly, but these four are no strangers to the well-beaten path. They’ve sung for urban chapters, rural chapters, heads of state and best of all, for you.

      Opportunities! We got opportunities!

A long-standing Harmony College tradition: you are given the opportunity to shed some of your useless dollar bills (what’s to buy except more CDs?), and receive a thank-you gift of a small slip of paper with a number on it. Later in the evening, we seize the opportunity to thank you further by calling off numbers which may happen to coincide, and give you lovely merchandise such as….

      Beanie choruses

Oh yeah, they’re going to sing, too. Relax: how long can it go on?

      Bus trip tonight

    • that the bus to the casino leaves at 8 pm.

      Or you could just sleep

The Wednesday Night mid-term break started as a way to relax after the first few intensive days of school, and has become a grueling night of revelry. Oh, the pains of having fun singing and eating and sipping from opaque plastic cups which should remain in your rooms! But, having a rest is a swell idea, too. Drink lots of water, and prepare for the rest of the week of singing!

      Earl Moon scholars

The Earl Moon Memorial Endowment Fund was established by the Whittier Chapter following the passing of their director of over 25 years, Earl Moon. The fund is intended to provide scholarships for deserving Barbershoppers to attend Harmony College, where Moon had shared his knowledge and friendship with Barbershoppers for so many years. The Chapter is proud to extend its recognition and congratulations to such deserving brothers in harmony to be the 2003 Earl Moon Scholars:

Richard Lund (pictured left) is a member of the Placerville, California chapter in the Far Western District, and in his fourth year as a Barbershopper.

Ron Chafetz (pictured right) is from the Arlington, Texas chapter in the Southwestern District, and is a seven-year Barbershopper.

Ron's and Richard's responses to their selection were not unexpected. "I'm grateful for this opportunity, and I want to thank the selection committee for their consideration of me for this scholarship," said Ron. "YES! YES!! YES!!! Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! Wow, I can hardly believe it. I am really stoked!" said Richard. When informed of this year's selections, Millye Moon said, "It really makes my day to think that something he (Earl Moon) loved so much is going on because of him. Thanks."

Top Ten Ways To Stay Awake In A Lecture Class At Harmony College

      10. Sit on a thumbtack.

      9. Put a dozen or so ice cubes in your shorts just before class

      8. Think of all the work you’re avoiding at home.

      7. Mentally translate the lecturer’s words into Latin.

      6. Pretend your head is bowed studying your notes in front of you.

      5. At least wear a breath-rite strip to avoid snoring and identifying yourself.

      4. Take a few beers with you to drink and stay away from the restroom—that’ll keep you alert!

      3. Get some sleep the night before!

      2. Think of the ordeal at home of raising two teenage daughters.

And . . . the number one way to stay awake is:

      1. Sit in back of the room and sing tags with three other sleepy guys.
