Revised C&J Rules and C&J Handbook
An updated version 4 of the C&J Handbook and a separate C&J Rules is posted on the web site by following these links from the BHS home page: Compete/Contest and Judging Home/ BHS Contest and Judging Handbook
A significant amount of the changes are formatting. This includes significantly more hyperlinks within all tables of content, including chapter contents, and internal hyperlinks to cross references. Hopefully this will aid some users.
As to substantive changes:
CJBook-02 Definition of the Barbershop Style - Amended by SBOD per SCJC request to emphasize predominant lead and deemphasize not tenor melody.
CJBook-03 C&J Rules – The C&J rules chapter has been completely reorganized to add a chapter table of contents and headings and paragraph names for easier access and referencing. While it looks like many changes were made, most of the black-lines refer to the paragraph naming and numbering. As noted in revision history on page 3-28, significant changes are out-of-district chorus provision, brief and appropriate use of subunit for chorus ("subunit"), copyright compliance clarification on documentation and performance as well as effect of non-compliance, and clarification on contest timing. The headings and table of contents are major format changes.
CJBook-04 The Judging System - Update style definition per chapter 2.
CJBook-05 MUS Cat Description -
a. Incorporation of category MUSt committee review of language.
b. Addition of section V on Usage of Chords and Voicings, formerly in section II.
c. Update of scoring section to include rules change on chorus subunit and SCJC agreement on MUS responsibility for consonant four-part chords and predominately homophonic.
CJBook-06 PRS Cat Description -
a. Updated scoring section to include reference to reduction grid on scoring form.
b. Update of scoring section to include rules change on chorus subunit and SCJC agreement on MUS responsibility for consonant four-part chords and predominately homophonic.
c. Updated cross references to current C&J Rules sections. Deemphasized forfeiture and any automatic policy.
CJBook-07 SNG Cat Description -
a. Updated scoring section from former to current rule on choruses.
b. Used same language as PRS CD in III.E.d since excessive tenor melody is no longer in style description.
c. Incorporated SCJC agreement on MUS responsibility for consonant four-part chords and predominately homophonic.
d. Updated cross references to current C&J Rules sections. Deemphasized forfeiture and any automatic policy.
CJBook-12 Administration & Policies -
a. Updated section I.B-D to indicate joint appoint per Society bylaws.
b. Added note indicating that DDCJ may be DVP, in light of SBOD decision not to adopt DDCJ language in Operations Manual at present.
CJBook-13 Contest Administration & Operation - Updated triple panel seating to current arrangement and added quadruple panel seating option. Added explicit provision on seating guest judges and candidates.
CJBook-15 Copyright Clearance for Competition - Includes SBOD clarification on acquisition, learning and performance.
CJBook-16 Penalties and Forfeitures - Updated per current policy and rules
CJ-20 (Contest Entry) -Updated language on acquisition, learning, and performance and effect of non-compliance
CJ-22 (Panel Expense Form) - Updated to allow change in mileage rate without revising form
CJ-26-27-28 (Scoring Forms) - New size now including reduction grids on front side.
Other chapters and forms did not change.
