Ignition! quartet declared ineligibleUpdated: 11/6/2007 5:17:31 PM On Sunday, October 14, 2007, the Society Board voted to disqualify the Society quartet known as Ignition! from the Rocky Mountain District International Preliminary Contest held over the weekend of April 27-29, 2007. This decision was made after determining that the quartet had not received copyright clearance for their arrangement of one of their competition songs performed in the RMD contest. The Society became aware of the lack of copyright clearance when attempting to obtain mechanical and synchronization licenses to produce the song on the International Quartet Contest CD and DVD. After receiving information from the quartet regarding their efforts to obtain copyright clearance, the Society Board determined that members of the quartet were aware prior to the RMD contest they had not received notification of copyright clearance, and that the quartet had filed an inaccurate contest entry form (CJ-20) for the RMD spring prelims and thus disqualified the quartet from that contest. The Barbershop Harmony Society fully supports U.S. and International Copyright law and requires all of its performing units to do so as well. Competitors are responsible for obtaining clearance to arrange songs for contest; the entry process for all competitions makes this, and the penalty for failure to do so, clear.
