Youth Chorus Festival

2nd Annual International Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival - January 31, 2009
Pasadena, California
Now in its second year, the International Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival has established itself as the premiere Festival for young male a cappella choruses. Students of all ages will sing for the best and most encouraging audience in the world, get critique and feedback from highly-trained and enthusiastic judges, and will return home with a confident passion and enthusiasm for singing that they will pass on to every other singer in your area.
In addition to performing, each chorus has the opportunity – at no cost to them – to hear the very best barbershop quartets in the world on two different shows. They will be able to attend a “Masterclass” on barbershop singing and put together one song to be sung with all participating choruses.
Finally, each chorus will have the opportunity to listen and evaluate another youth chorus using an adjudication form – a rare opportunity in an International Festival environment. If you’re looking for a unique way to touch on National Standards #6 & #7 this year, the International Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival can help!
Speaking of National Standards, the International Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival enables your chorus to successfully demonstrate competence with the following National Standards (taken from MENC’s National Standards for Music Education):
#1 - Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music (through their performance at the Festival!)
#3 - Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments (tag-singing and “woodshedding” provide excellent opportunities for vocal improvisation outside of the jazz genre)
#5 - Reading and notating music (through the learning process in preparation for the Festival)
#6 - Listening to, analyzing, and describing music (seeing the very best quartets in the world!)
#7 - Evaluating music and music performances (through critique of another participating youth chorus)
#9 - Understanding music in relation to history and culture (barbershop is one of the few uniquely American forms of music)
