Learn How to Register

I arrived at Harmony University without really knowing how it was going to be, and as an international student I felt a little fear because I did not know anyone. However, since I arrived at the airport I started to feel the HU energy, I must say I was never alone all week, the classes were completely according to what I wanted to learn, had a lot of options and everyone always treated you with respect...I'll never forget my first tag!

Harmony College

A course track for our barbershoppers (and the new and curious) who want to learn more about our style of music, leadership, and even history!

This event should be on every barbershopper’s “bucket list.” Coming to Harmony College means you can enjoy a potpourri of classes offered. You are not tied to a specific curriculum and have the freedom to enjoy many Harmony College classes. Harmony College classes are enlightening, engaging, and fun, and the extra curricular activities, the late night tagging, and all the ice cream you can eat will make you long for more hours in the day. General areas include:

Arranging
Vocal production
Theory
History
Performance practice

If you sign up for Harmony College, you will have a wide selection of courses to choose from, and we have added new class titles and faculty to give you many new choices!

Director's College

Become the director your chorus deserves. Inspire and uplift singers.

Directors college has core offerings that we encourage you to take… but YOU get to choose. We hope you will always take:

1) Conducting Techniques

Our classes are broken down by your current directing situation:

Outstanding in Front: Me, a director? (1 hour)

People who are just starting to kick the idea of directing around, but only want to give an hour a day

Conducting Techniques for new and aspiring directors (2 hours)
Brand new people (or getting up the nerve people), and are ready to dive in deeper

Barbershop Conducting Techniques for music educators (2 hours)
Music educators who would like to take their choral direction and move towards our melded BHS style

Conducting Techniques for BHS front line directors (2 hours)
Frontline directors who are in the trenches with a chorus

Each class has a registration limit of 15 and is a two block class (two hours). Gone are the days of 30 people with little one-on-one contact time. Much like listening to your favorite song, we encourage you to take this class over and over again. Class times are offered throughout the day. Geared for accomplished directors as well as emerging directors.

2) Private lessons in Conducting.

You may sign up for 30-minute private lessons with our faculty. While you will receive feedback in your conducting class, we know there is no replacement for private contact time. $25 a lesson.

3) Other core classes

Take a look at the many classes offered that apply to directors in and out of barbershop. Many are built to help with rehearsal techniques, general leadership principles, or even score study.

4) Jump start your week with director tutorials

Whether you are a seasoned veteran, first-year teacher, or just about to graduate with your music degree, the Music Educator track at Harmony University is an opportunity to surround yourself with the worldwide experts of the barbershop style. Come learn everything you wanted to know about barbershop (and more!) – from history, to arranging, to vocal techniques. We will place you all together in the Music Educators seminar at 10:30, then give you free choice to select just about anything you think is interesting to YOU! If you are unclear, use the tab that gives “First year suggestions” to guide you with some specific classes that would give you a great overview. We will even extend the offer for you to “float” and class hop.

Harmony University will offer Continuing Education Unit (CEUs) and graduate credits through Adams State. For further information, contact harmonyu@barbershop.org. Detail information will be provided in the Spring.

Performing Arts College & Coaching

Daily coaching for Quartet, Chorus, and Next Generation chorus (for guys under 25)

This is for our students who attend as part of an organized singing group. Participants will have 2 two hour sessions (one at 10:30 AM, then again at 4:30 PM). Students will have the opportunity to take electives classes at 8 AM, 2 PM and 3:15 PM. Some of our members will decide to rest between your coaching sessions... you choose! If you have no idea what to register for, look at our first year course suggestions.

Quartet Coaching

Monday-Friday your group will be coached by the same 4 world class coaches. They each represent four distinct areas, and while they each could coach outside of these areas, they will focus on:

Music (interpretation, development, tuning)
Singing (Vocal production issues)
Performance (authentic presentation of the song)
Showmanship (packaging of groups of songs, spoken word and interaction)
These coaches may be joined by a Coaching Apprentice and Observer to watch how they work with each group. On Friday night, you will sing and be recorded on our big stage for the entire student body. On Saturday, you will have a chance to sing a set in informal locations all over Nashville for non-barbershoppers… test your skills with the type of audience you will perform for back home.

We recognize that since many guys this age are in high school, college, or newly in the workforce, they (or their families) may not be able to afford the cost of full tuition. Our process for the past four years was to grant half scholarships to the first 40 registered. This year, in order to have a better way to respond based on financial need, we have added a short application process that we hope will allow us to stretch our scholarship dollars further and accept more applications for NextGen specifically and for HU in general. You can apply for a Next Generation scholarship HERE.

If you have questions about this change, please feel free to contact us at harmonyu@barbershop.org.
