    Director College

Inspire and uplift singers: become the leader you were meant to be.

Director's College has core offerings that focus on conducting technique and leadership principles. Courses include:

    • Outstanding in Front: Me, a Director? (1 hour) - geared for section leaders and aspirant directors
    • Conducting Techniques (2 hours) - geared for assistant directors and new frontline directors
    • Conducting Techniques for Front Line Directors (2 hours) - Frontline directors who are in the trenches with a chorus
    • Conducting Ballads and Melding Techniques (1 hour) - arguably the trickiest part of being a director is learning when to drop parts of the gesture to evoke a more artistic singing

Each class has a registration limit of 15. We encourage you to repeat these classes in subsequent years. Class times are offered throughout the day.

    Private lessons in Conducting

You may sign up for 30-minute private lessons with our faculty. While you will receive feedback in your conducting class, we know there is no replacement for private contact time. $35 a lesson.

    Other core classes

Many are built to help with rehearsal techniques, general leadership principles, or even score study.

    48433345221 3F49B98E99 K

This is for our students who attend as part of an organized singing group being coached (quartet or chorus), who are participating in Next Gen, or who are in the Coaching Apprentice and Teaching Assistant Program.

Participants will have 2 two hour sessions, and students will have the opportunity to take electives classes. Some of our members will decide to rest between your coaching sessions...you choose! If you have no idea what to register for, look at our first year course suggestions.

    Quartet Coaching

Monday-Friday your group will be coached by the same 3 world class coaches. They each represent three distinct areas, and while they each could coach outside of these areas, they will focus on:

    • Music (interpretation, development, tuning)
    • Singing (Vocal production issues)
    • Performance (authentic presentation of the song)

These coaches may be joined by a Coaching Apprentice and Observer to watch how they work with each group. On Friday night, you will sing and be recorded on our big stage for the entire student body. On Saturday, you will have a chance to sing a set in informal locations all over Nashville for non-barbershoppers -- test your skills with the type of audience for which you will perform back home!

In order to ensure your quartet's spot, you will need to pre-register. Space is limited!

    Chorus Coaching

Monday-Friday your group will be coached by the same 4 world class coaches. They each represent four distinct areas, and while they each could coach outside of these areas, they will focus on:

    • Music (interpretation, development, tuning)
    • Singing (Vocal production issues)
    • Performance (authentic presentation of the song)
    • Conducting

Coaches may be joined by a Coaching Apprentice and Observer to watch how they work with each group. On Friday night, you will sing and be recorded on our big stage for the entire student body. In order to be considered for Chorus College:

    • You must place a deposit
    • Your chorus must bring 20 or more members to Harmony University
    • Understand that we will be giving you both musical AND leadership coaching during the week

    Next Generation Mixed Chorus

For men and women ages 18 - 25

The Next Generation Chorus is for young men and women between the ages of 18 to 25 who want to learn more about barbershop. This chorus experience is a mix of fun, incredible learning, and just a great time.

The Next Generation Mixed Chorus will meet Monday to Friday to learn 4 or 5 songs! With your registration, you can also take additional classes and electives.

This week will help you become a better singer, arranger, or even a future chorus director! Sing in a phenomenal chorus that’s sure to be one of the highlights of your barbershop life!

    Next Generation Scholarship Opportunities

We recognize that since many people this age are in high school, college, or newly in the workforce, they (or their families) may not be able to afford the cost of full tuition. Our process for the past four years was to grant half scholarships to the first 40 registered. This year, in order to have a better way to respond based on financial need, we have added a short application process that we hope will allow us to stretch our scholarship dollars further and accept more applications for NextGen specifically and for HU in general.

You can apply for a Next Generation scholarship HERE.

If you have questions about this change, please feel free to contact us at harmonyu@barbershop.org.
