Overview

This brand new contest event was created to celebrate 20 of the best Barbershop Harmony Society quartets to never win the gold. Support from all 17 districts funded the digitization of these performances, some of which date back as early as the 1950s… many have not been seen since appearing on the contest stage. Proceeds from event ticket sales will support BHS programs and initiatives, including the BHS Archives Project, which supports the preservation of historic performances like these and allows us to share them with our worldwide audience.

Creating the Event

After much study and debate, an esteemed panel of BHS judges, historians, and quartet champions selected a total of 25 potential quartets to compete. Our selection panel then determined the 20 competitors based on the availability of audio and video footage. A random draw was held to determine the order of appearance.

What to Expect

Two songs from the 20 competing quartets will be shown, similar to standard BHS contest format. Due to the limited footage available for the early contest years, a small number of songs will be audio only.

Estimated run time for the Semifinals is around 5 ½ hours, similar to a traditional top 20 contest session.

After the Semifinals have concluded, those who purchased event tickets will cast their votes for the Finalists. The Top Ten will be announced and the draw for order of appearance in the Finals will be shared on Monday, August 24th. Watch our Facebook page for details!

Ways to Watch

Free on YouTube

The Legacy Quartet Championship will be premiered as a single video event on the BHS YouTube channel at 3:00pm Central on Saturday, August 22nd. During the event, all viewers - those with tickets to our live video chat rooms and those viewing the YouTube video only - will see the same video stream. Viewers will not be able to watch ahead, but can go back to view performances they might have missed.

If you are viewing the Legacy Quartet Championship FREE on YouTube, here’s what to expect:

  • There will be an eight-minute gap between quartets. (During this time, hosts and attendees in our ticketed video chat rooms will be discussing the performances, sharing stories, and taking questions.)
  • There will be an on-screen countdown so it is clear when the next quartet will begin. The order of appearance can be found here.
  • There will be an additional 5 minute intermission after quartets #5, #10, and #15.
  • If you’d like to join a chat room after the event has started, you can purchase a ticket here. Join the (virtual) party!
  • At the conclusion of the event, a playlist of each song performed in the Semifinals will be posted to our YouTube channel.

  • Pro tip: Make some notes about the quartets as you watch to help with your voting!
  • At the conclusion of the event, a playlist of each song performed in the Semifinals will be posted to our YouTube channel if you’d like to review any performances before you cast your vote.

Tips for Viewing

Whether you’re watching on your own or in our event chat rooms, you’ll want to have the best viewing experience possible! Here are a few tips:

  • To really bring these performances to life, you may wish to view on your smart TV with the YouTube app or use a streaming device (chromecast or similar). You could also use an HDMI cable and plug a laptop directly into your TV.
  • Chat room attendees: Using the methods above, you have the option of watching YouTube on your TV and using a laptop or desktop for the Zoom chat room. Alternately, you can open two windows on your device and use the HDMI method above to view them, which would still give you the ability to type and talk in the chat rooms using your laptop or desktop while viewing everything on your TV.
  • If you’re planning to watch on something other than your computer, test your setup ahead of time! You can use any video on our YouTube channel to set up and test your preferred method of viewing.
  • Test your Zoom connection: If you haven’t used Zoom before, download the Zoom app. You can test your system anytime before the event by visiting https://zoom.us/test and selecting “Join”.
