A Message From the Society Board: BHS/HFI Communications Timeline and Documents
Members and Friends of the Barbershop Harmony Society,
As many of you know, there has recently been a growing misalignment between the Barbershop Harmony Society and Harmony Foundation International. The events and announcements of the past few weeks have kindled numerous public discussions about the current state of the relationship. We think you ought to know how this has come about and where we stand today.
BHS provides a wealth of programs, education, and events for our members. For 60 years, HFI has been the fundraising partner for BHS, and for many years, BHS has been encouraging the Foundation to improve its business model in order to bring more funds to the table to enable us to do even more for the barbershop community. Despite many meetings between the two organizations and specific requests for improvements, no change has been forthcoming.
During the past months, three of our Board members have attended meetings with three HFI trustees, facilitated by a representative group of the District Presidents Council. We listened, we shared thoughts and feelings, asked and answered questions in an attempt to find resolution to our fundamental disagreements.
Unfortunately, it has become clear that these talks are inconclusive and not productive, as the individual groups have differing viewpoints which seem to be irreconcilable. These talks between the Barbershop Harmony Society and the Harmony Foundation International have not produced satisfactory results, and we have concluded our participation.
For those who are interested in more detail, we are making available a timeline of the events between BHS and HFI that have led us to this point, as well as supporting documentation that we hope will provide a clearer understanding of each organization's position on key issues and demonstrate the ongoing attempts to align mission and determine how we might work together in the future.
We welcome you to look through the materials, ask us more questions (email SocietyBoard@barbershop.org) and stay engaged in the evolution of this issue. Your questions and concerns have been heard, and we will continue to work for the good of the Barbershop Harmony Society, its members, and the members who have generously supported the Barbershop Harmony Society by making gifts to HFI.
Your Society Board of Directors
