Coaching Mentorship at HU
The Coaching Mentorship program at Harmony University is designed for experienced barbershop coaches looking to further develop their skills at a high level of proficiency.
During the program, mentees will observe, assist, and actively engage in coaching sessions while receiving ongoing guidance and feedback from faculty.
Selected participants will be paired with an expert Harmony University faculty coach, with the opportunity to indicate preferred faculty. Throughout the week, you’ll work alongside your assigned BHS faculty coach with quartets or choruses in attendance, depending on the coach's assignment. Participants will connect with their faculty coach in advance of HU to build rapport and establish a cohesive approach to working together. Additional support is available from the Coaching Mentorship Program Faculty as needed.
Admission is competitive and application-based, requiring submission of a coaching résumé/CV along with two short videos: a 2-minute introduction and a brief sample of you coaching an ensemble (maximum 10 minutes).
This program is separate from the Coaching courses offered at HU, and is intended for students who already have a significant level of coaching experience. If you have minimal or no coaching experience, we encourage you to explore the Coaching courses offered in the Harmony University course catalog.
Qualified Applicants should have:
A strong understanding of barbershop music and style
Demonstrated experience coaching ensembles (minimum of 2 years)
Experience as a barbershop director and/or singer
Confidence working with high-level ensembles
Openness to feedback and a willingness to grow
Strong self-awareness and the ability to balance participation with observation
By the end of the program, participants will:
Expand their coaching toolkit with new exercises and techniques
Improve prioritization and decision-making in coaching settings
Build confidence working with high-performing ensembles
