Don't fall for the myth that you can't sing

Sing to please yourself, for no other ears

The crippling notion that singing belongs only to the best singers deprives many people of the pleasure of making music just for fun. Who says you can’t sing?

Writing in the Chicago Tribune, Amy Nathan traces the sources of singing fear. Each person’s voice is a very personal part of identity, and a culture that treats singing activities as presentational instead of participatory judges each voice more critically. Shows such as “American Idol,” in which singers are mocked for imperfection, reinforce the fear.

At the Barbershop Harmony Society, we believe that every person can sing! Although we love to perform, please don't think that singing is only for exhibition. The most important singing is what you do for yourself, with no one listening. Sing to satisfy yourself.
