The fabric of belonging

The fabric of belonging

BHS CEO Robert Rund reflects on the joys of returning to familiar barbershop homes — our conventions.

Some of my favorite memories in more than 50 years as a BHS member have been made at barbershop conventions and Harmony University. Singing tags with new and old friends in lobbies, stairwells, and any acoustically magical corner; meeting people who soon become lifelong friends; being treated to performances on and off stage; witnessing the growth of quartets and chapters; and learning about someone’s life beyond barbershop—all of these are threads of connection that, woven together, create a fabric of belonging.

As we head into the season of Fall District Conventions, I find myself excited for the chance to reconnect with familiar faces, meet new friends, and immerse myself once again in a shared barbershop experience. If you’re already planning to attend, I encourage you to pause each day and simply take in the beauty of our community—remembering that our pursuit of harmony extends far beyond music itself.

If you haven’t yet made the decision to attend, I urge you to consider investing your time and treasure. The returns—memories, friendships, inspiration—can truly last a lifetime.

We are fortunate to share a hobby that brings people together, where our collective voices create more than the sum of their parts. Along the way, please remember the countless hours of volunteer time, energy, and heart that make these experiences possible. If you see a member of your convention team, a chapter “do-er,” or a judge, take a moment to thank them. Their work makes all of this possible.

In Harmony,

Robert Rund

P.S. I would love to hear about the memories you make this fall, or your favorite convention memory from the past. Send me your memorable moments in the form of a story, photo or video to CEO@barbershop.org.
