Reasons why— and what's next

The health and safety concerns that have impacted every part of life for the last year led to the decision that an in-person convention this summer was simply not feasible. Working directly with quartets, chorus leaders, district leaders, the judging community, and the convention bureau in Cleveland, it became clear that the prudent course for all interests would be to rebook the event in Cleveland for 2024. We have secured the same facilities, the same rates and will enjoy all the great advantages Cleveland had promised for this year.

Charlotte 2022 offers biggest, most inclusive contests ever

With that decision made, the Society is working hard to make the process of refocusing on 2022 as easy as possible for all concerned.

Notably, all choruses previously invited to Cleveland will be able to go to Charlotte, plus more choruses that qualify via live or video judging. This points to the biggest and most inclusive chorus contest ever, with a full field of men’s, women’s and mixed harmony choruses, all qualified by scores of 78 and above.

At this time, it is expected that in-person spring contests can happen safely in 2022, so there will be no change made to quartet qualification.

Chorus qualification for 2022

Who qualifies automatically?

Invitations to the 2022 International Chorus Contest will automatically be extended to all chrouses who had previously qualified for 2021 Cleveland, regardless of whether they had accepted the invitation.

How else can choruses qualify for Charlotte 2022?

The long interruption to regular rehearsals caused by the pandemic will result in choruses taking some time to return to their normal performing level. For this reason, the qualification score for the 2022 International Chorus Contest has been lowered to 78. This means that additional choruses to be invited include

  • All choruses that competed in the Fall of 2019 and were their district rep or were offered a wild card but declined the invitation, as these choruses all scored at 78 or higher.
  • Any choruses that scored 78 or higher at International 2019 or at their Fall 2019 contest.
  • Any choruses that score 78 or higher at their Fall 2021 contest (if their district has one). Any Fall 2021 contests that happen will be to qualify choruses only based on scoring 78 or higher. The highest scoring chorus will not automatically receive an invitation as district representative.
  • Any chorus from an Alliance organization that qualifies to represent that organization through the existing process.
  • NEW! Any chorus that submits a video of a contest set that is scored at 78 or higher. The chorus must register for video qualification by December 1, 2021 but the video will not need to be submitted until the spring of 2022 at a date to be determined.
  • NEW! Any chorus that scored 78 or higher at a Spring 2022 contest with at least a double panel of BHS judges. The chorus must register for a live spring contest qualification by December 1, 2021.

Exceptions:

  • The deadline to accept an invitation into the Chorus Finals based on prior scores is December 1, 2021, the same as the deadline to register for video or live Spring 2022 qualification.
  • The normal rules regarding replacement of an International Chorus Competitor will not apply for 2022. (See II.F.2 International Chorus Contests, Replacement.)
  • All other rules apply as written in the C&J Handbook.

How will choruses be notified?

Look for communications from Harmony Hall in the next few weeks via email.

Quartet Qualification for 2022

The standing process will return, with qualifying contests in Spring 2022. No further action is required right now.

Next Gen Varsity Quartet Contest and Chorus Festival

Age limits revised for 2022 and 2023

We know how hard singers have worked to qualify for this event, and the cancellation for the second year will bring questions on how we will handle the age limit.

  • We are temporarily increasing the maximum age to 27 for the 2022 Varsity Quartet Contest and Chorus Invitational.
  • The maximum age will be reduced to 26 for the 2023 event.
  • The maximum age will return to the program’s previous age limit of 25 in 2024 and for subsequent events.

Qualification process for 2022 Varsity Quartet Contest

  • The program is open to women’s, men’s, and mixed harmony ensembles.
  • All quartets will need to qualify, regardless of previous qualification for prior events
  • Video qualification will be open from August 1- December 1, 2021, mirroring prior year qualification windows.
  • The 20 highest scoring quartets will be invited to compete

Application process for 2022 Varsity Chorus Contest

Frequently Asked Questions

Why call off the event this summer? We’re so close!

We still can’t see the future with perfect clarity. Vaccines are rolling out at different rates in different areas. We looked at everything:

  • Health & safety concerns
  • Guidance from Cleveland convention officials
  • Prep time required for participants
  • Direct feedback from our International-level and festival quartets
  • International travel restrictions
  • CDC Guidelines on large scale events
  • Guidance on the risks for singing due to COVID-19

Ultimately, even as conditions improve, we can’t be sure of reaching the magical mix of a competitive event, in a safe setting, with a full field of competitors, and a full audience.

Are we getting a graceful exit? — Yes! Rebook. No penalty.

Cleveland’s team has been outstanding in working with us to rebook for 2024. We have negotiated good deals that make it attractive financially for guests and for the Society.

Who had input into this decision?

We talked with our volunteer leadership, quartet competitors, chorus leaders, district leaders, local convention hosts, industry professionals.

Why can’t I transfer my Cleveland 2021 registration to the 2021 virtual event scheduled in its place?

We want to make the process of moving from one face-to-face event to the next (Cleveland→ Charlotte) as seamless as possible, and these both are in the same ticketing system. Our virtual events use different platforms and would entail much greater expense for all involved. With the virtual event still under development, it made more sense for us to start processing the donations, transfers and refunds immediately.

If I choose to donate my registration, where do the funds go?

If you'd like to donate your registration, your tax-deductible gift will support your BHS Next Generation Barbershop program, specifically the Junior Chorus Invitational that will take place in Pasadena at the Midwinter Convention in January 2022. The purpose of the Junior Chorus Invitational is to offer young singers and educators a mountaintop experience that locks in a lifelong appreciation for vocal harmony and the communal experience of barbershop culture. The result of your investment is helping educators attracting more singers, helping young singers increase their confidence, discipline, teamwork, and creativity, and helping them all become stronger leaders in their schools, communities, and families. Learn more and to see the difference this work has made on one chorus.

Will Charlotte 2022 feature the “new” event schedules originally set for CLE 2021?

We’re still working on the schedule, but yes, we still aim to have the broad range of activities including a red carpet gala awards event, lots of education offerings, many casual singing opportunities and afterglows, and festival performances in addition to competitions.

What will replace this? Will there be a virtual convention in Virbela?

We have not yet finalized all our plans for this summer, but should have further information in a few weeks. The strong positive reaction to our 2021 Virtual Midwinter Convention from all who attended suggests there’s plenty of demand for more social connections like this.
